Old is gold. This classic adage holds true for many things – vintage clothes, hawker food, wine, and even gaming consoles. Before all the high-tech gizmos, we had 8-bit characters stomping on evil mushrooms, and speeding hedgehogs sprinting for gold rings. And if you’re pining for a blast from the past, here are five updated retro gaming consoles that will bring you right back to the good ole’ times.

There’s something about this virtual pixelated pet that makes it so … enduring. It was a sensation back in the 1990s (hand’s up ’90s kid), of feeding and caring and crying, and the cycle repeats itself over again. And now, Bandai has re-released this iconic handheld gaming device with the original pets and features encased in a familiar egg design. But they now come in a smaller design, making it even more portable. Available at Amazon Japan for￥2,450.
2. SNES Classic Edition

Nintendo is calling this the return of “the golden age of 16-bit gaming”. We’re calling it as it is: endless hours of nostalgic fun. The Super Nintendo Entertainment System Classic Edition is a follow-up of the NES Classic Edition released last year, and it comes in a signature retro console look. And it comes loaded with 21 games from the yesteryears, which include Super Mario World, Kirby’s Dream Course, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Donkey Kong Country, and Final Fantasy III. Available from Sept 29 for USD$79.99.
3. Super Retro Boy
As far as retro gaming consoles go, none has stolen our hearts more than the ubiquitous Game Boy. And we’re talking about the old ones that don’t come with a backlight, making it really hard to play it sneakily in the dark when it’s long past bedtime. So the good people at Retro-bit has created their version of the updated Game Boy, for you to slot in those cartridges and smash those ‘A’ and ‘B’ button. It looks, and feel, remarkably like the Game Boy Colour, which scores major points in our books. Slated for an August release at Retro-bit for USD$79.99.
4. Atari Flashback 8 Gold Console

To rival that of the SNES Classic Edition, Atari will also be releasing the Atari Flashback 8 Gold Console, which comes loaded with 120 of your favourite Atari 2600 games, which include the likes of Pitfall, Asteroids, Space Invaders, and River Raid. The combination of black and gold adds to the whole #throwback experience. Available from Sept 22 for USD$79.99, or pre-order from Target.
5. Sega Genesis Flashback
